Angels acquire closer Raisel Iglesias from Reds in trade
ANAHEIM, Calif. โ The Los Angeles Angels acquired closer Raisel Iglesias from the Cincinnati Reds for right-hander Noรฉ Ramirez and a player to be named or cash Monday in the first trade of the week of baseball's winter meetings. Iglesias has been the Reds' closer for the past four seasons, racking up 100 saves in 114 opportunities over that stretch with a career 3.15 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. The trade allows the Reds to save money while putting a cornerstone in the Angelsโ bullpen, which is being rebuilt by rookie general manager Perry Minasian this offseason. One week after acquiring veteran shortstop Josรฉ Iglesias from Baltimore, Minasian added one of the most effective closers of the last half-decade. โWe want to play meaningful games at the end of the season,โ Minasian said.

Angels fire GM Billy Eppler after 5 straight losing seasons
ANAHEIM, Calif. โ The Los Angeles Angels fired general manager Billy Eppler on Sunday after the team finished its fifth consecutive losing season under his watch. The Angels finished 26-34 in the pandemic-shortened season with a star-studded roster including three-time AL MVP Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon, three-time NL MVP Albert Pujols and Shohei Ohtani. Eppler rebuilt a farm system that was left barren by former GM Jerry Dipoto, and he both signed Trout to a massive contract extension and persuaded Ohtani to bring his two-way talents to the Angels. Yet Eppler never managed to sign enough quality pitchers to prevent Trout's Angels from being a perennial also-ran. Eppler repeatedly guessed wrong in his signings from Matt Harvey to Julio Teheran, leaving the Angels with one of the majors' worst starting rotations for much of his tenure.
Trout sets franchise HR mark, Angels rally to beat Astros
One out later, Adell lined a two-run single to right off Enoli Paredes (1-2) for his first game-ending hit. Kyle Tucker homered and drove in three runs for the Astros, who lost in walk-off fashion for the second straight game. With two outs and runners on second and third, Martin Maldonado hit a two-run single to right-center. After Yuli Gurriel's two-run single in the third, Tucker extended the lead to 4-1 with a run-scoring infield single. It is the seventh game to start with triple-digit temperatures since the ballpark opened in 1966.
Trout ties Salmon's Angels career HR record with No. 299
ANAHEIM, Calif. Mike Trout tied Tim Salmon's career record for home runs with the Angels, connecting for No. Trout drove a sinker from Houston's Lance McCullers Jr. over the wall in center for a two-run shot. The 29-year-old Trout is a three-time AL MVP and won the award last season. Trout was the 25th overall pick in the 2009 MLB draft and made his big league debut in 2011. Salmon played his entire 14-year career with the Angels from 1992 to 2006 and was part of their only World Series championship in 2002.
Trout homers twice, helps Angels rally to 10-9 win over A's
Trout's solo drive off Yusmeiro Petit (1-1) in the eighth helped the Angels stop a three-game skid. It was the 20th multi-homer game of Trout's career, which tied Tim Salmon and Vladimir Guerrero for the franchise record. Los Angeles trailed 9-4 in the fourth when Trout began the rally with a two-run drive into the Angels' bullpen in left field. Chapman gave Oakland a 5-3 lead an inning later with a two-run drive to center for the fifth multi-homer game of his career. He will be opposed by right-hander Dylan Bundy (2-1, 2.08), who threw the Angels' first complete game since 2018 last Wednesday at Seattle.
Maddon: Shohei Ohtani won't pitch again for Angels this year

(AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)Shohei Ohtani won't pitch again this season for the Los Angeles Angels after straining his right forearm in his second start, manager Joe Maddon says. Ohtani likely will return to the Angels' lineup as their designated hitter this week, Maddon said Tuesday night before the club opened a road series against the Seattle Mariners. The Angels' stance on Ohtani is unsurprising after the club announced he had strained the flexor pronator mass near the elbow of his pitching arm. Ohtani issued five walks during the 42-pitch inning against the Houston Astros, with his velocity dropping later in the frame. Ohtani has pitched in only three games since June 2018, but the Angels still believe in Ohtani's ability to be a two-way player, Maddon said.
Angels' Trout confirms he'll play this year with baby on way
The three-time AL MVP confirmed his decision Wednesday before the Angels' final exhibition game against the San Diego Padres at Angel Stadium. He doesn't know how much time he'll spend away from the team after his wife, Jessica, gives birth to their son, likely in August. Trout expressed uncertainty earlier this month about the safety of this unique major league season, saying he wouldn't risk his growing family's health to participate. Two weeks ago, he was still up in the air about whether to play this season. Its definitely been great so far. After three weeks of experience with the regulations put in place by the Angels and Major League Baseball, Trout is cautiously confident in baseball's ability to hold a season safely.
MLB releases 2021 schedule; all 30 teams to open on April 1
The league released the full schedule Thursday, two weeks before it plans to begin a 2020 season that's been delayed and shortened by the coronavirus pandemic. MLB intended to start this season on March 26, its earliest opening date ever except for international games. Instead, a 60-game regular season schedule is scheduled to begin July 23, with clubs set to play only division foes and regional interleague opponents AL East vs. NL East, AL Central vs. NL Central, AL West vs. NL West to limit travel. Clubs will resume full intraleague schedules in 2021, and interleague play will again align regionally. MLB also tried to have every team play its first game on the same day in 2018, but two games were postponed due to poor weather.
