Heavy rain hits Florida, flooding strands Miami vehicles

Tropical storm warnings that had been in effect for Florida's east coast and the northwestern Bahamas were discontinued. Heavy rainfall continued Saturday, but was diminishing as the weather system moved away from the island. Canal levels in South Florida have been lowered to minimize flooding from heavy rains. The National Hurricane Center predicted rainfall up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) was possible in South Florida, including the Florida Keys.wftv.com

Monkey business: Researchers find origins of Florida colony
DANIA BEACH, Fla. — (AP) — A colony of monkeys has lived for about 70 years in urban South Florida, near jets taking off from a nearby airport and fuel storage tanks. Researchers at Florida Atlantic University say they have traced the colony's origins to the Dania Chimpanzee Farm. The South Florida SunSentinel reported Wednesday there was a monkey escape from the farm in 1948, with most of the monkeys recaptured. The FAU researchers traced the monkeys' genetics and concluded they were brought to Florida from Africa. One thing is certain: Residents of the Dania Beach area where the monkeys live are extremely protective of them.wftv.com
Colony of ‘friendly’ wild vervet monkeys grows near Florida airport
DANIA BEACH, Fla. – A colony of African vervet monkeys has lived in Dania Beach, near the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, for decades, but more people have been noticing them lately. Missy Williams, of the Dania Beach Vervet Project, was able to create a sanctuary for the colony of 40 monkeys near the Park N’ Go, an off-airport parking operator, News 6 partner Local 10 reports. Williams, a Florida Atlantic University researcher, has named them all and she has a database with files for each of the monkeys. Unlike different species of monkeys in northern Florida, the vervet monkeys do not carry herpes in their saliva, urine or feces, Williams said. Feeding wild primates is prohibited by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and harassing them is also not allowed.
Florida hotel employee finds woman’s body in room
DANIA BEACH, Fla. – Florida authorities are investigating the death of a woman whose body was discovered Tuesday afternoon by a hotel employee. Broward County sheriff's deputies are considering the death at a Dania Beach hotel to be suspicious, WPLG-TV reports. The body was found when the employee entered a guest room. “Upon deputies’ arrival, they located an adult female unresponsive on the third floor of the hotel,” Sgt. “Broward homicide detectives are classifying this as a suspicious death and are trying to identify the cause of death for the female.”Some guests checked out of the hotel after learning of the death.
