Maitland's Enzian Theater adds new HVAC unit for added indoor screening safety

click image Phtoo courtesy Enzian/InstagramThe Enzian Theater in Maitland has installed a new HVAC unit with UV filtration for added safety at their indoor screenings. This type of air handling unit is designed to more effectively reduce air pollutants, bacteria and (yes) viruses. Other Orlando venues, including the Winter Park Playhouse and the Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts, have already invested in this safeguard measure. "As more vaccines become available, and Oscar contenders such as(opening this Friday),, androll out this month and next, we hope to see more attendees, and are very pleased the installation of our new HVAC coincides with the arrival of these award-winning films. "It's also worth mentioning that the annual Florida Film Festival presented by and at the Enzian is scheduled to kick off on April 9.The Enzian is currently operating at 50 percent capacity with socially distanced seating. The Theater is also running an outdoor series, Fountain Features, though their February FF programming is currently sold out.

More changes coming to Orlandos film slams in January

click to enlarge Photo via Enzian Theaterclick to enlarge Photo via Orlando Museum of ArtThe Orlando Museum of Art will host Jen Vargas's FilmSlam starting in January. January will mark a new beginning for Orlandos film slam programs both of them. The Enzian Theater will continue its slam (a showcase and competition for student, independent, low-budget and no-budget short movies from Florida filmmakers) on January 19, but it will now be known as Central Florida Film Slam (CFFS). In addition, the Enzian has formed a CFFS advisory board that will include nearly a dozen industry professionals, including former Florida Film Festival programming coordinator Clementine Leger.Perhaps the biggest change is that one film from among the six monthly winners will now automatically be accepted into the Florida Film Festival. The fact that a film can now move directly from CFFS to the Florida Film Festivals Florida Shorts program is huge. Each months audience-vote winner will win an automatic screening during the 15th annual Central Florida Film Festival, a cool trophy and other opportunities to screen with our local film-festival partners! For more information about the Enzians slam, visit Enzian.org .

Midnight movie 'Chopping Mall' will leave you screaming for the 80s

click to enlarge Photo via Concorde PicturesWe've already mentioned how Enzian's monthlong schedule of horror movies this year is on point. But this week's Midnight Movie the first of four playing this month is a real treat. A movie about teenagers who stay late at the mall to bone at a furniture store only to find that the mall's security robots (not a real thing, '90s babies) have malfunctioned and are out for blood, Chopping Mall is a veritable checklist of '80s horror. But because it was not created by the Enzian and has always been a volunteer-run event, ownership of the FilmSlam name has been disputed. As Orlandos local art-house theater, Enzian and its film slam [sic] program is the perfect setting for students to gain experience in the independent film industry. )The 2020 dates for Enzians FilmSlam will be Jan. 19, March 8, May 17, June 14, August 9 and Oct. 11.

Enzian Theater drops on the deck and flops like a fish for a screening of 'The Spongebob Squarepants Movie'

click to enlarge Image courtesy of Nickelodeon MoviesAlthoughhas been around for 20 years, only the first three seasons of the show, along with the 2004 feature film that the Enzian is showing this week, were under the direct supervision of show creator Stephen Hillenburg. Hillenburgs sense of absurd humor is one of the reasons the show garnered a cult following from ostensible adults in the early 2000s, and it probably peaked with this feature. Parents may grumble that a so-called kids movie is scheduled for way after bedtime, but this screening isnt really geared toward the younguns as much as those who were young when it first debuted.9:30 p.m. Tuesday; Enzian Theater, 1300 S.
