GAINESVILLE, Fla. โ As a solution to Miamiโs notoriously congested traffic, Tesla Inc. founder Elon Musk is proposing to dig tunnels with The Boring Company, one of his many business ventures. โIt doesnโt seem very smart and it is certainly going to be expensive,โ said Kurtis Gurley, a professor of structural engineering at the University of Florida. Gurley said one challenge of the project would be keeping water out of the tunnels while shoring up its walls. Felice noted that engineers earlier this decade completed the 4,200-foot (1,280 meters) Port of Miami Tunnel, which had a price tag of $668.5 million. The Boring Company burrows utility and freight tunnels under cities to alleviate congestive traffic and shave down transportation times.

Miami mayor wants residency restriction for COVID vaccine

The state is also administering the vaccine at Hard Rock Stadium, in Miami-Dade County. Miami-Dade Commissioner Eileen Higgins, whose district includes parts of Miami, called it a bad idea to let cities reserve vaccine doses for their residents. โWeโre working on a registration system that we plan to launch in the coming weeks to help integrate site registration and fix some of the problems that weโve all read about,โ he said. In Pinellas County, reservations for 10,000 vaccines were filled in about one hour after registration opened on Friday morning.
Florida officer to be disciplined after wearing Trump mask while voting
MIAMI, Fla. โ Miami Mayor Francis Suarez held a news conference Tuesday afternoon regarding an incident in which a police officer was photographed wearing a Trump 2020 face mask while in uniform at a polling location, News 6 partner Local 10 reported. Suarez confirmed that the officer was in line to vote when the photo was taken and said he was unsure whether the officer was on duty at the time. Regardless, he said the officer will be disciplined. Floridas top Democrat unveils ads aimed at mask wearing
Critics have said DeSantis should have shut down the state sooner last spring as the virus was spreading and should order a mandatory statewide mask requirement. As of Monday, Florida had a total of 491,884 coronavirus cases and around 7,200 related deaths. On many days last week, the number of reported new cases was around double Monday's tally. Florida's seven-day average of daily reported deaths was 176, second to Texas in total numbers for the summer resurgence of the pandemic in the Sunbelt states. Floridas numbers compare with average daily reported deaths of more than 760 per day for New York in mid-April.
Florida reaches grim coronavirus milestone
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Florida health officials say the state has reached a grim milestone: more than 200,000 people have tested positive for the novel coronavirus since the start of the outbreak. The highest number of confirmed cases in one day came Saturday, when more than 11,400 cases were reported. There were 451.9 new reported cases per 100,000 people in Florida over the past two weeks, which ranks second in the country for new cases per capita. Also in Florida: Four Miami Marlins baseball players and a third Miami Heat basketball player have tested positive. While only a third of the general populations racial identity is something other than non-Hispanic white, 85% of the coronavirus cases in June were people of color, the paper found.
