Florida Board of Governors sets rules for student athlete pay

The state university system’s Board of Governors on Wednesday adopted regulations about athlete compensation and student disciplinary proceedings.

Florida Republicans proposing changes to Bright Futures, student financial aid

Students whose majors aren’t on the list would receive less funding from the Bright Futures Scholarship. Bright Futures students are currently eligible for 100% or 75% of tuition but under this bill that would depend on their education track. “I went to UCF on Bright Futures and wouldn’t be here today without it,” said Eskamani. “We need to protect and enhance Bright Futures not cut it.”Along with the changes to Bright Futures, the proposal would also create two new financial aid programs. AdThe Florida Endeavor Scholarship would benefit students without a high school diploma who wish to enroll in a certificate or high school equivalency program.

Bethune-Cookman University cancels rest of athletic season due to virus

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – After a recent spike in coronavirus cases on campus, Behtune-Cookman University has cancelled the remaining 2020-21 athletic season, the historically Black university announced this week. According to the university, B-CU is one of the first NCAA Division I institutions to end athletics for the remainder of the year. University officials said the decision was made after a series of meetings with athletic staff, medical and public health experts as well as state and local officials. “The risk premium is simply too high and our priority remains the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff,” Chrite said. Over the past eight days, however, we’ve noted a sudden spike in cases on campus, hence this decision.” Thompson said.

UCF moves spring break to April followed by remote learning

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The University of Central Florida is preparing for the spring semester as more cases of COVID-19 are being reported in Florida and around the U.S.To help curb the spread of COVID-19 school officials will be moving spring break back a month. “To help limit the spread of COVID-19, we will be rescheduling spring break from March to April 11 to 18,” Vice President of Student Development and Enrollment Services Dr. Maribeth Ehasz said. Students will be able to start registering for spring classes on Nov. 2 as scheduled. School officials will continue to require face coverings and physical distancing while on campus. The school said it is ready to pivot to more remote learning if necessary.

Can UCF force students into random COVID-19 testing?

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Students at University of Central Florida will soon undergo random testing for COVID-19. Now UCF will undergo random testing - starting with 100 students in Greek life. While she supports random COVID-19 testing, she thinks students need more accountability. In a message sent out to students and staff, UCF said the random tests are required and those who refuse may be required to self-isolate for two weeks and may be subject to disciplinary action. UCF said the first group of students chosen for the COVID-19 testing will be notified Thursday by email.

UCF to conduct random virus testing starting with Greek life

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – After three sorority houses were placed on quarantine and a series COVID-19 cases connected to University of Central Florida Greek life, the university will begin random virus testing next week. Last week, UCF suspended a sorority and a fraternity for violating the school’s COVID-19 policies. [RELATED: Labor Day parties, increase in COVID-19 student cases prompts warning from UCF to students]Deichen said random testing will continue throughout the semester in groups UCF believes may be at risk of increased rates of infection. Random tests will be required for students, faculty and staff who are selected, unless they never come to any UCF campus. Outside of random testing, UCF offers testing six days a week in Garage A from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
