Puddles formed on the putting surfaces when play was stopped, and the rain kept coming. It will be the eighth Monday finish since The Players Championship began in 1974, and the first since 2005. The Players was held in May for 12 years until returning to its earlier date in 2019. The opening round was delayed an hour at the start, and then was suspended for 4 hours, 15 minutes. Column: Uncertain future for Europe and Ryder Cup team

This was not a bad European team, just a team that wasn't performing well away from home. The question going forward is what Europe will look like when the Ryder Cup goes to Italy. “The Ryder Cup in Europe represents the European Tour as much as Europe itself,” Harrington said when he announced his three picks. Wiesberger was the only Ryder Cup player for Europe who wasn’t a PGA Tour member. The PGA Tour and European Tour are starting to work together, such as the Scottish Open being part of the U.S. schedule and European Tour members having access to lower-tier PGA Tour events.

(AP Photo/Jeff Roberson) (Jeff Roberson)SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — (AP) — The American crowd knew where it hurt Europe the most. We want Rory!” the fans shouted, mockingly, on the first tee box with the second day of the Ryder Cup about to begin. Not even the rest afforded by an unheard-of Ryder Cup benching in the morning could turn things around for the former world No. McIlroy's three losses are part of a disappointing Ryder Cup for the Europeans, who closed the day trailing 11-5, a deficit no team has ever overcome. McIlroy was paired in the final game Saturday with Poulter, and there was no understating the significance of that partnership.

McIlroy was not in the lineup for Saturday's foursomes matches, marking the first time he's ever been sat at the Ryder Cup. “A lot of good things can still happen,” Garcia promised after seeing his was the only Europe win on the board. Horschel outlasts Scheffler in sloppy final of Match Play

AUSTIN, Texas – Billy Horschel had just enough left in the tank to win the Dell Technologies Match Play on Sunday with plenty of help from Scottie Scheffler in a sloppy end to the longest week in golf. “It was one of those days where I didn't play very good,” Horschel said, still able to smile because of the outcome. “I was just grinding it out.”It ended a great run for Scheffler, a Texas graduate who had to beat three former Match Play champions and two players from the top 10 in the world to reach the championship match. This time, Horschel got up-and-down to save par and halve the hole, and he won the match when Scheffler missed a 10-foot birdie putt on the 17th. The championship match didn't feature a birdie since Horschel's chip-in on the fifth hole.

Horschel had never made it to the weekend in his four previous appearances in Match Play. Morikawa builds big lead at Muirfield Village before storms

(AP Photo/Darron Cummings)DUBLIN, Ohio Among the lessons Collin Morikawa took away from missing his first cut as a pro was that his reliable cut shot had left him. He found at it Muirfield Village, and suddenly looks as though he'll be tough to catch at the Workday Charity Open. Morikawa ran off four straight birdies after making the turn Friday, finished with another birdie and shot 6-under 66 to build a six-shot lead when thunderstorms arrived in Ohio. I had heard from a lot of people before, this course was going to suit a left-to-right shot, anyway, Morikawa said. I think sometimes when something really doesnt go your way, like missing a cut, it just stands out a little more, he said.

4-way tie for lead at Heritage as another wild finish looms

Tyrrell Hatton of England had one of six rounds at 63 as he tries to win back-to-back starts for the second time in his year. Abraham Ancer rode his strong iron play to a 65, while Ryan Palmer had a 66 to join the lead at 15-under 198. A week ago at the Charles Schwab Challenge, 14 players were separated by three shots going into the final round. The six rounds at 63 marked the third time since October that at least six players shot 63 in a round. There were seven such rounds at the RSM Classic in November, about 80 miles down the Atlantic coast at Sea Island.

Jordan Spieth putts on the 10th green during the first round of the RBC Heritage golf tournament, Thursday, June 18, 2020, in Hilton Head Island, S.C. (AP Photo/Gerry Broome)Ian Poulter and Mark Hubbard set the pace for good scoring through a brief spell of rain at Hilton Head. Spieth didn't figure to be part of the conversation until bouncing back from a triple bogey with eight birdies for a 66. It was the kind of break Spieth has seen far too often during three years without a victory. He was on such a roll that Spieth began to contemplate eight straight birdies to end his round. Michael did a great job of reminding me that today when it wasnt going well on my front nine, Spieth said.
