2 great white sharks ping off Virginia coast

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Two great white sharks appear to be spending their fall break off the Virginia coast. A “ping” occurs when a tagged shark’s dorsal fin breaks the surface of the water, TCPalm.com previously reported. Researchers first tagged Bob and Tancook in September 2021 near Nova Scotia, Canada, according to OCEARCH. Since then, Bob has traveled an estimated 2,725 miles, while Tancook has logged a whopping 6,949 miles, the organization reported. Tancook’s name “means ‘facing the open sea’ to the local indigenous Mi’kmaq people of Nova Scotia,” the organization said.

Great white shark pinged off Florida’s east coast

An 800-pound great white shark was swimming about 20 miles from Florida’s east coast earlier this week and is now cruising parallel to the Florida Keys. On Saturday, the great white was pinged swimming near the Florida Straits at about 11:05 p.m. EST, the OCEARCH tracker showed. For every tagged shark that make its presence known when it surfaces off of our beaches, there are plenty more non-tagged sharks out there. Researchers tagged Sable off the cooler waters of Nova Scotia, as the juvenile shark was temporarily hauled onto a boat by a hydraulic lift on an OCEARCH research vessel. “Sable is the 76th shark sampled, tagged and released in the nonprofit research organization’s Northwest Atlantic White Shark Study and the third of Expedition Nova Scotia 2021,” OCEARCH’s website states.

Ocearch founder says people have "irrational" fear of sharks

We are in the middle of the cultural phenomenon known as "Shark Week." But for some parts of America, this may seem like every week. Attacks on both coasts raise new concerns this summer about beach safety, but Ocearch founder and expedition leader Chris Fischer believes people have a "statistically irrational" fear of sharks. Fischer joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss what's behind the worldwide all-time record for attacks, how to keep safe and his latest shark tracking and tagging expeditions.
