SEBASTIAN MUNOZ

Munoz shoots 60 at Byron Nelson, record 2nd this season

Byron Nelson Golf Hideki Matsuyama, of Japan, reacts after putting on the 18th hole during the first round of the AT&T Byron Nelson golf tournament in McKinney, Texas, on Thursday, May 12, 2022. Munoz was at 2-under par a one-stroke penalty because of a wayward tee shot at the eighth hole. The 29-year-old Colombian, who lives in the Dallas area, then went 6-under in the next four holes. In the middle of the fairway after his tee shot at the 18th hole, another par 5, Munoz missed the green to the right. TPC Craig Ranch, the second-year home of the Nelson, is about 30 miles north of downtown Dallas and 30 miles east of the University of North Texas, where Munoz went to school.

Lahiri leads by 1 as Players Championship hits home stretch

Fourteen players were separated by three shots, the margin Justin Thomas made up in the final round last year. The final round this year was scheduled for Monday afternoon. Lahiri would be among the biggest surprise winners in a championship that features the strongest and deepest field in golf. While he has won nine times on tours in Asia and Europe, and played in the Presidents Cup in 2015, he has never won on the PGA Tour. But every single PGA Tour event, the level of golf is unbelievable.”___More AP golf: https://apnews.com/hub/golf and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsCopyright 2022 The Associated Press.

Gooch handles the wind at Sea Island and takes 1-shot lead

Gooch matched the low score of the round — Taylor Moore had a hole-in-one on the 17th hole at Seaside for a 65 — and was at 13-under 129. Moore and Mackenzie Hughes of Canada (68 at Seaside) were two shots behind. Still seeking his first win, Gooch hasn't missed a cut in six starts this fall and has finished 11th or better four times. “Obviously I’m playing well, but I think my game has made a turn for some good stuff in some ways. Munoz, who matched the tournament record with a 60 in the first round at Seaside, birdied his last hole to share second with Huh.

Lucas Glover is a winner again after 10 long years.

Munoz takes 1-shot lead in wide-open John Deere Classic

Rain overnight and more during the third round left the TPC John Deere soft and prone to low scoring, and just about everyone took advantage. He led by one shot over Brandon Hagy, who is still looking for his first PGA Tour victory in his 93rd career start. Ten players were within three shots of the lead, all of them knowing what it would take in the final round — birdies. Even so, he still has a chance at his first PGA Tour title. Of the 20 players within five shots of the lead, seven have never won on tour.

Luke List goes on a birdie binge for 63 to lead John Deere

List ran off seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch in the middle of his round, his only par on a 12-foot birdie chance on the 15th hole, and posted an 8-under 63. That gave him a one-shot lead over Sebastian Munoz going into the weekend at the TPC Deere Run. List is still searching for his first PGA Tour victory, though that wasn't front and center over the last month. “I was able to keep hitting the fairway, which out here is premium, and I was able to attack from the fairway,” List said. Among those making it to the weekend was Steve Stricker, the 54-year-old Ryder Cup captain and three-time John Deere Classic winner.

(Jessica Gallahger/The Dispatch – The Rock Island Argus via AP) (Jessica Gallagher)SILVIS, Ill. — (AP) — Sebastian Munoz never knows when the switch will come on and the putts start to fall, but he recognized it happening Thursday in the John Deere Classic. Munoz was motoring along when he closed with five straight birdies at the TPC Deere Run for an 8-under 63, turning a solid day into a share of the lead with Chesson Hadley. “It's funny because when I make a lot of birdies, I usually play a little more safe and pick my spots. That will leave the three-time John Deere champion some work to do Friday afternoon to make the cut. “I'm not used to getting up at 5 in the morning anymore to play,” Stricker said.

(AP Photo/Chris Carlson) (Chris Carlson)Opening Day at the PGA Championship essentially wound up a draw. “This is the most difficult golf course that I’ve played on Tour, and that is a straight-up fact for me.”Conners chose a simpler practice regimen and it paid off handsomely. At the par-3 14th, Jordan Spieth, who wound up shooting 73, could be heard pleading with his tee shot to stay on the putting surface: “Sit! Sit, sit, sit, sit, sit, sit, sit, sit … PLEASE!”“It’s there,” someone on the tee box reassured him. That belonged to Sebastian Munoz, who was hardly the only golfer to pull his tee shot well left and off the 18th fairway.

Rahm closes with a 66, ends memorable Masters week

Jon Rahm had a great week before even getting to the Masters.

A different Augusta National await newcomers from November

The Masters features only six players, three of them amateurs, who have never played in the Masters.

Five months later, measure of normalcy at Masters in April

(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel, File)AUGUSTA, Ga. – The record score at Augusta National wasn't all that set Dustin Johnson apart from other Masters champions. No other Masters champion was allowed to keep his green jacket for only five months before it was time to try to win it again. Augusta National is blazing with pink and red and purple azaleas, accented by the white blooms of dogwood. Ad“I think it will be back to feeling like a normal Masters,” Johnson said. Augusta National had no choice but to keep the spectators away in November because of the pandemic, just like the other majors last year.

An opening day of emotions and a few surprises at Match Play

In the Dell Technologies Match Play, every day can feel like Sunday. “I turned out to hit that shot really well, went super high over the trees. It was his biggest loss in Match Play since Ben Crane beat him, 8 and 7, in the second round of 2011. Kevin Kisner, the defending champion from 2019 — the Match Play was the third event to be canceled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic — won his seventh straight match by beating Louis Oosthuizen. When you're up against an opponent who plays really, really well and you play just a little better, it's really satisfying."

Big finish sends Garcia to big lead at Players Championship

Garcia thought he had plenty of time to get from the range to the 10th tee to start his round. Then he fired off a 7-under 65, capped off by a birdie-birdie-eagle finish for a two-shot lead over Brian Harman. AdWhen darkness brought the first round to a halt — 21 players didn't finish — there already were 13 scores of 80 or higher. “For some reason, it just kind of fits my eye,” said Garcia, who won The Players in 2008 and has twice been runner-up. British Open champion Shane Lowry took bogey on his final hole for a 68 and was tied with Corey Conners and Matt Fitzpatrick.

Ortiz holds off Johnson, Matsuyama for 1st PGA Tour victory

HOUSTON – Carlos Ortiz held off Dustin Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama by closing with a 5-under 65 to win the Houston Open on Sunday, becoming the first Mexican to win on the PGA Tour in 42 years. He had to settle for a two-putt birdie, and it held up when Johnson and Matsuyama narrowly missed birdie chances coming in. Needing two putts to win, the 29-year-old holed a 20-foot birdie putt for a two-shot victory. Ortiz held back tears as he waited for his playing partners to putt. The Houston Open was the first domestic PGA Tour event that allowed spectators, with 2,000 tickets sold daily.

Late birdies let Justin Thomas keep slim lead at Sherwood

Thomas got one good break, made two good birdie putts and wound up with a 5-under 67 that gave him a one-shot lead over Jon Rahm going into the final round. Lanto Griffin, who had the lead until bogeys on two of his last four holes, was another shot behind. Got a really, really good round going early on.”Thomas was at 19-under 197. Griffin opened with four straight birdies to take the lead, and he stayed there until the end of the round. Thomas was playing well enough, even if he had little to show for it after opening with two birdies.

Munoz in the lead and Woods with his worst score at Sherwood

Throw in a wild tee shot for double bogey, three bogeys and only five pars and it added to an 8-under 64 and a one-shot lead. That led to a 4-over 76 — by two shots his worst score in 49 rounds at Sherwood Country — that left him 12 shots out of the lead and in no mood to talk. He is a five-time winner at Sherwood, along with five runner-up finishes, against small fields in a holiday exhibition. On the par-5 13th, he sent his tee shot again to the right, partially blocked by a tree. The sand shot didn't quite reach the green.

Munoz picks up where he left off, shares lead in Mississippi

His only bogey came on the ninth hole when his drive landed in a divot and he missed the green to the left. Walker wasn't feeling his best and wasn't sure what to expect, especially after missing two short birdie putts to start his round. “I’ve always had stuff with my left shoulder, but I just picked up some tendonitis at the U.S. Open,” Walker said. After two short misses, Walker realized he needed to move the ball up slightly in his stance. Henrik Stenson, playing in Mississippi for the first time in 10 years had a 70.

Johnson, Scheffler favorites for tour's top player, rookie

For the PGA Tour player of the year, the candidates were Johnson, Thomas, PGA champion Collin Morikawa (two wins), Webb Simpson (two wins) and Jon Rahm (two wins). Johnson won the Travelers Championship and The Northern Trust to go along with his FedEx Cup title he won at the Tour Championship. He also was runner-up to Morikawa at the PGA Championship. More interesting will be the vote for PGA Tour rookie of the year. ... Country singer Colt Ford, who once played professionally, is making his PGA Tour Champions debut on a sponsor exemption.

Poulter sets pace and Spieth turns it around at Hilton Head

Jordan Spieth putts on the 10th green during the first round of the RBC Heritage golf tournament, Thursday, June 18, 2020, in Hilton Head Island, S.C. (AP Photo/Gerry Broome)Ian Poulter and Mark Hubbard set the pace for good scoring through a brief spell of rain at Hilton Head. Spieth didn't figure to be part of the conversation until bouncing back from a triple bogey with eight birdies for a 66. It was the kind of break Spieth has seen far too often during three years without a victory. He was on such a roll that Spieth began to contemplate eight straight birdies to end his round. Michael did a great job of reminding me that today when it wasnt going well on my front nine, Spieth said.
