FHP: DUI crash sends car into pond at Waterford Lakes shopping center

Woman extricated from vehicle in pond; 20-year-old man arrested

WATERFORD LAKES, Fla. – A 20-year-old man was arrested on DUI charges early Tuesday after he rear-ended a car, sending the vehicle into a pond at the entrance of the Waterford Lakes shopping center, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened around 2:20 a.m. on Alafaya Trail near State Road 408.

According to troopers, Alexander Chiaravalle, of Jupiter, was driving a four-door Kia northbound on Alafaya Trail and rear-ended a four-door Mazda that was stopped at a red light.

The Mazda, driven by a 38-year-old Orlando woman, was pushed into the pond and became partially submerged, the FHP said. The woman was extricated by firefighters and taken to Florida Hospital East with serious injuries, troopers said.

Chiaravalle was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, the FHP said.

He refused to provide a breath sample but was arrested on charges of DUI and careless driving, troopers said.
