Police said witnesses told officers that the operators of several dirt bikes without "street-legal" equipment, such as lights or license plates, had been driving at high speeds on University Boulevard for about an hour before the accident. The riders were not wearing helmets or other protective equipment.

Melbourne police said the driver of a Ford Mustang convertible traveling east on University Boulevard was attempting to turn left onto Grant Street when one of the dirt bikes hit the passenger side of the Mustang.

"The bike’s operator was ejected and landed on the street on the other side of the car," police said in a statement.

The dirt bike’s operator and the car’s passenger were taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne.

Police said the bike operator was in serious condition. The passenger in the car is listed in stable condition.

The Melbourne Police Department’s Traffic Unit investigated the crash.

As of Monday morning, police had not released the identities of the people involved in the accident.
