Death investigation underway near in Pine Hills

PINE HILLS, Fla. – A man found lying in the middle of an Orange County road died from gunshot wounds after the case was initially investigated as a fatal crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The man was discovered lying in the road around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday near Woodwind and Merriewood drives in Pine Hills. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, troopers said.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to the area for a report of a “man down," and it was originally believed that the man had been hit by a car. The FHP then investigated and it was determined that the man had been shot, officials said.

Details about the man, including his name, or who shot him have not been released.

The OCSO homicide unit is investigating the man’s death.
