LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – A man was killed and a woman suffered serious injuries Thursday night when their sedan rear-ended a semi-truck on Florida’s Turnpike in Lake County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 10:15 p.m., south of Hancock Road, troopers said.
According to an FHP crash report, a 2025 Hyundai Elantra with a 22-year-old man behind the wheel and a 23-year-old woman riding as a passenger — both from Mobile, Alabama — was traveling south on the Turnpike when the driver failed to slow down for a semitrailer that had slowed for traffic ahead. The front of the Hyundai struck the rear of the semi, the report states.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene while the woman was taken to ORMC, FHP said. Troopers believe neither of them were wearing seat belts during the crash.
The 45-year-old Naples man driving the semi was not injured and remained at the scene, troopers said.
FHP is still investigating.
