BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A man fleeing from police Friday night in Titusville died after crashing into a tree, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 8 p.m. on Barna Avenue, near Nickalaus Drive, troopers said.

According to an FHP crash report, a 35-year-old Titusville man was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu and actively running from Titusville police — traveling southbound on Barna Avenue, approaching Nickalaus Drive — when the Malibu struck a palm tree, a fence, and a sign.

The Malibu “had been previously stop-sticked” and was traveling on and off the roadway prior to the crash as a result, the report states.

The driver was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, troopers said. It was unknown whether he was wearing a seat belt during the crash, according to the report.

FHP is still investigating.
