VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A pickup truck was taken into evidence after it struck and killed a pedestrian in Volusia County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 6 a.m. Friday on State Road 40 (West Granada Boulevard) near Booth Road, troopers said.

According to an FHP crash report, a 44-year-old Daytona Beach man was driving a 2021 Ford F-550 eastbound on S.R. 40, approaching Booth Road in the outside lane, as a 32-year-old Ormond Beach man was walking westbound on the eastbound outside paved shoulder.

The driver drifted from the outside lane onto the outside shoulder and the Ford struck the Ormond Beach man as a result, the report states, adding the driver then stopped briefly in a nearby parking lot.

The Ormond Beach man was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

Troopers later made contact with the driver, who said he drove home after the crash and believed he had struck an animal in the roadway. The pickup truck was then taken into evidence, according to the report.

FHP is still investigating. There was no word at the time of this writing of any charges pending against the driver.

This is a developing story. Check back here for updates.
