Trooper Steve on Patrol: Back to the basics at the stop sign

It’s more than just stopping

ORLANDO, Fla. – If you’ve spent any amount of time driving, you’ve probably encountered thousands of stop signs.

They’re so common that many of us stop thinking about them altogether. That’s exactly why I wanted to spend some time this week getting back to the basics.

Today on Trooper Steve on Patrol, we focused on one of the most recognizable traffic control devices on the road: the stop sign.

While most drivers know they’re required to come to a complete stop, there are several other important rules that often get overlooked.

Florida law requires drivers to stop at the clearly marked stop line, before entering a crosswalk, or before entering the intersection if no markings exist. But stopping is only part of the equation. Drivers must also yield the right-of-way to pedestrians, bicyclists, and any vehicles already in or approaching the intersection closely enough to create a hazard.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is drivers treating stop signs like suggestions. Rolling through a stop sign, even at a slow speed, is still a violation and can create dangerous situations for other motorists and pedestrians who are expecting traffic to stop.

The goal this week is simple: a refresher on the rules many of us learned years ago but may not think about anymore. Whether you’ve been driving for six months or sixty years, it’s always a good idea to revisit the fundamentals.

After all, safe driving isn’t just about knowing the rules; it’s about remembering to use them every time you get behind the wheel.

Join me on Trooper Steve on Patrol as we continue our “Back to the Basics” series and take a fresh look at the everyday traffic laws that help keep Florida’s roads safe.
