Cleanup efforts after Hurricane Matthew underway at Daytona Beach

Downed trees and power lines still blocking streets

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Many residents and businesses in Daytona Beach spent their Sunday cleaning up after Hurricane Matthew came through Central Florida last week.

All that was heard were the sounds of chainsaws replacing the sounds of high speed winds and rain, now that Hurricane Matthew has come and gone.

Residents, like Clifford Perry, were picking up what Matthew left behind. His 82-year-old father has lived in his Daytona Beach home for the past 20 years. The storm knocked down several large trees around his house and blew shingles off the roof.

"I'm just getting the debris that I can get up. It's a sad storm that came through here," Perry said.

But Perry's father was one of the lucky ones. News 6 drove around his neighborhood and found several trees that fell onto houses. There were also other trees that split into pieces, and several power lines were down, knocking out electricity to that area for the past three days.

"Do you have any idea when your power will be restored? News 6 asked. "Hopefully today, hopefully. It should have been restored two days ago," Perry said.

News 6 saw a power crew, who came from Tennessee, down the street repairing the lines.

Perry said it has been tough living without electricity.

"I survive with a cooler, ice, with water, food inside a cooler," he said.

It's not just the neighborhoods cleaning up. Around the city, there are a lot of businesses that were also destroyed and several intersections where traffic lights are still out.

News 6 found a gas station still boarded up and the canopy was completely blown off by the storm.

Down the street we also saw public works crews with the city working on the weekend to blow off leaves and debris on the roadway.

These are sights you'll see over  the coming days as everyone cleans up and rebuilds.
