NHC increasing odds for development in Atlantic Basin

New tropical wave to emerge from Africa

Three areas are highlighted for possible development in the Atlantic Basin.

ORLANDO, Fla. – The National Hurricane Center has highlighted a new disturbance in the tropical Atlantic, and the odds for potential development are slowly increasing.

A tropical wave is expected to move westward off the African coast early next week. The NHC is now giving this wave a medium chance of development next week as it travels westward.

A Tropical Depression is possible in the Atlantic by the end of next week.

If this wave gets north of the Caribbean it will enter a relatively favorable environment for further development. Upper level wind shear will weaken over the Atlantic main development region next week. On top of that, there will be a break in Saharan Dust over this area. Both combined give this wave a chance at development.

The system will likely curve out to sea if it survives.

Near Bermuda

A weak area of low pressure southeast of Bermuda is producing an area of disorganized showers and storms. Slow development is possible as it drifts south and then lifts north early next week as a front begins to absorb it.

Development chances are low, 20 percent, over the next seven days.

Near Azores

A strong non-tropical area of low pressure is locates several hundred miles northeast of the Azores. The system could acquire some subtropical tropical characteristics over the weekend as it moves toward Portugal and Spain.

Development chances end beyond Sunday.

There is a 20 percent chance for development.
