ORLANDO, Fla. – As Hurricane Irma approaches Central Florida -- and if you are riding out the storm at home -- the key is to find a safe place to shutter in during the storm.
The safest place to be in your home to be during Hurricane Irma is on the lowest floor.

Experts say you need to be in an interior room of your home and away from any windows, sliding glass doors or skylights.
The bathroom, closet or storm shelter can provide safety for you and loved ones. Remember to keep a weather radio and flashlights on hand if the power goes out.
Experts also say if you are going to use a generator during the storm, you should know how to use it safely.
Joe Strada, from Strada Electric, told News 6 there are some important things to remember when it comes to generator safety:
1. Always keep the generator outside and at least 20 feet from any open window or door.
2. Make sure you keep a clear, three-foot radius around the generator.
3. Never use a generator inside.
Taking these steps should better prepare you for whatever weather comes your way.
