ORLANDO, Fla. – A new tropical wave is set to move off the west coast of Africa by Friday, and while development isn’t expected right away, the system could slowly organize by early next week as it tracks west across the open Atlantic.
While the environment isn’t particularly favorable right now, some gradual development could occur as conditions become slightly more supportive.
As of Thursday morning, the chance of development is near 0% over the next 48 hours, but it increases to 30% over the next seven days, according to the National Hurricane Center.
This is not a system to worry about in the immediate term, but it’s a good reminder that hurricane season is far from over.
Historically, many of Florida’s most impactful hurricanes, including hurricanes Helene, Milton, Michael and Ian, developed after the traditional peak of hurricane season.
The next named storm will be called Gabrielle.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs through November.
