These 12 Central Florida restaurants were closed last week over health concerns

Roaches, rodents and more cited in shutdowns

Last week, a dozen more eateries across Central Florida were told to close temporarily after a visit from a health inspector, according to the Florida DBPR.

Health inspection records reveal that these restaurants suffered problems with rodents, cockroaches, storage concerns, time/temperature issues, and other types of violations.

However, all restaurants were eventually allowed to reopen within a few days, those same records show.

Below are the 12 restaurants that were forced to close down between Sept. 29 and Oct. 5.


DAYTONA BEACH

  • Stand #3 — 2987 Bellevue Road
    • Closed on Oct. 3
      • Ten rodent droppings found on premises
      • Shelled eggs not stored at proper temperature
    • Met inspection standards on Oct. 3

KISSIMMEE

  • Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews — 7640 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy.
    • Closed on Sept. 29
      • Over a dozen rodent droppings found on premises
      • Ice machine in kitchen soiled with food debris, mold-like substance or slime
      • Trash can blocked both cook line and handwashing sinks
    • Met inspection standards on Sept. 30

LADY LAKE

  • Perkins Restaurant and Bakery — 905 Bichara Blvd.
    • Closed on Oct. 3
      • Employee seen cracking raw shell eggs and then handling ready-to-eat food and/or clean equipment without washing hands
      • Four live roaches found on premises
      • Shell egg in use or stored with cracks or broken shell
      • Roach spray improperly stored on rear prep table
      • Time/temperature violation for whipped butter
    • Met inspection standards on Oct. 4

MELBOURNE

  • Shells of Melbourne — 1490 W. New Haven Ave.
    • Closed on Oct. 1
      • Nearly 60 small, flying insects found throughout the premises
      • Pesticide-emitting strip present next to clean utensils in food prep area
      • Microwaves, can opener, ice machine panel, and soda gun soiled with old food debris
    • Met inspection standards on Oct. 2

OCALA

  • Charley’s Grill Subs — 3100 SW College Road
    • Closed on Oct. 2
      • Nearly 30 dead roaches found throughout the premises
      • Accumulation of mold-like substance inside ice machine
      • CO2 tanks not adequately stored, kept next to soda bags
      • Three live roaches found behind shelves above mop sink
    • Met inspection standards on Oct. 3

ORLANDO

  • Okayama Sushi & Hibachi — 2320 S. Kirkman Road
    • Closed on Oct. 3
      • Eight live roaches found on premises
      • One dead roach found on drain pipe of ware-washing sink
      • Sushi vinegar stored on kitchen floor
      • To-go containers were being reused
      • Establishment operated without a license from the Department of Hotels and Restaurants
    • Met inspection standards on Oct. 4

PALM BAY

  • China Moon Lin — 3085 SE Jupiter Blvd.
    • Closed on Sept. 30
      • Cooking oil and soy sauce containers stored on the floor
      • Over 30 spiders discovered in back of kitchen on equipment, ceiling tiles, and fire suppression equipment
      • Six live roaches found on premises
      • Gap on back door and wasted screen at bottom of door possibly allowed spiders and roaches into restaurant.
      • Single-service articles improperly stored in bathroom
    • Met inspection standards on Oct. 1

ST. PETERSBURG

  • Athenian Garden — 6940 22 Ave. N.
    • Closed on Oct. 1
      • Seven dead roaches found on premises
      • Three live roaches found on premises
      • Over a dozen rodent droppings discovered inside
      • Floor of walk-in freezer has large tear and hole in it
      • Lettuce stored in lined garbage bin of walk-in freezer
      • Employee spotted washing hands without soap
      • Time/temperature violations for chocolate mousse, tomatoes, cannoli, hummus, and gyro meat
    • Met inspection standards on Oct. 4

TAMPA

  • Mr. Empanada — 4836 N. Armenia Ave.
    • Closed on Sept. 30
      • Five dead roaches found in office area
      • Accumulation of mold-like substance inside the ice machine
      • Around 20 rodent droppings discovered around water heater by sink
      • Spray bottle with pink liquid left unlabeled below sink
    • Met inspection standards on Sept. 30
  • Outside BBQ — 1613 E. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
    • Closed on Oct. 2
      • Around 25 dead roaches found on premises
      • Around 30 live roaches found on sticky pad trap in employee bathroom, and around five more spotted underneath sink
      • Six egg sac casings discovered in employee bathroom
      • Seasoning and canned corn stored on floor beneath fryers
      • Dry noodles, canned peaches, barbecue sauce, and stored stored outside in rain
      • Single-service articles stored outside beneath shed that wasn’t fully enclosed
      • Time/temperature violation for chicken
    • Met inspection standards on Oct. 3
  • Smoothies Y Frutas — 7611 Causeway Blvd.
    • Closed on Sept. 30
      • Bulk sugar stored on floor next to ice machine
      • Plumbing system in disrepair, with a compartment sink being filled with gray water
      • Establishment operated without potable running water
      • Old food left in handwashing sink
      • Person in charge lacked proof of food
    • Met inspection standards on Oct. 1
  • Tropical Cuisine — 9005 E. Adamo Drive
    • Closed on Sept. 29
      • Three dead flies and one live fly found in cooking area
      • Two dead roaches found on premises
      • Nine live roaches found in non-functional ice machine and at drink cooler
      • Roach excrement also found in ice machine, along with three roach egg sacs
      • Time/temperature violations for macaroni salad, potato salad, chicken and pork
      • Spray bottle with toxic substance left unlabeled with yellow liquid under kitchen table
      • Accumulation of mold-like substance inside kitchen’s ice machine bin
    • Met inspection standards on Oct. 1
