TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida's Education Commissioner today announced Florida as the first state in the nation to offer the Microsoft IT Academy to middle school students.
The program is meant to provide the real-world technology skills necessary to compete and succeed in an increasingly global economy. Topics of study would include technical training and certification on Microsoft products, programming, web development, and database development technologies.
During his announcement, Florida Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson said, "Our partnership with Microsoft will enable Florida students to keep pace with changing technology and expand their college and career opportunities after graduation."
Cheryl Etters, the Press Secretary for the Department of Education tells Local 6, a list of the middle schools involved in the program has not been finalized.
Several Orange, Lake and Volusia county middle schools will likely get the program. No final decision for Seminole and Brevard counties.
