3 Volusia County teens charged in dragging death

Deputies say drug rip-off ended in murder

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Three teenagers in Volusia County have been charged with third-degree murder after officers say they dragged their victim to his death while he held onto their fleeing pick-up truck back in April.

Dempsey Hadley, 18, is accused of driving the truck and was arrested on Wednesday.  The two passengers who were also charged are 16-year-old Cole Kifner and 17-year-old Raekwon Watts.

Deputies say that the three teenagers met with their victim, Tristan DeJoy, to buy an ounce of marijuana. Officers allege that, based on interviews, the three attempted to rip DeJoy off.

The three teenagers then started to drive off in the middle of the transaction, as DeJoy clung to the window of the pick-up, according to sheriff's reports. One of the passengers is suspected of pushing DeJoy off of the truck. He later died from his injuries.
