ORLANDO, Fla. – Many Amazon customers will be reading their next e-book for free thanks to a recent settlement.
Some of the largest book publishers in the nation and a coalition of state attorneys general came to a settlement that allotted credits to Amazon users who purchased e-books between April 1, 2010 and May 21, 2012, according to Mashable.com
Hachette, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan and Penguin agreed to a settlement after a court case claimed they worked with Apple to artificially inflate e-book prices. Apple is continuing to fight the case.
As a result, people who purchased a New York Times bestseller during the time frame are entitled to a credit of $3.17 per book, and all other books are credited at 73 cents.
A judge ruled that Apple had violated antitrust laws on the matter, a ruling the company recently appealed.
