ORLANDO, Fla. – An arraignment was held Monday for a man who deputies say is the prime suspect in the death of an Orange County teenager.
Sanal Saint Simon pleaded not guilty to tampering with evidence, and a pretrial hearing was set for October 14.
The charges are in connection with the disappearance of 16-year-old Alexandria Chery, whose body was found days after she went missing. Alexandria was the daughter of Saint Simon's live-in girlfriend.
No one has been charged in Alexandria's death.
In a bond hearing earlier this month, prosecutors said Saint Simon lied about leaving work the day Alexandria vanished and then lied about borrowing a car and driving it to her home. Prosecutors also said the 43-year-old tried to clean up blood that was found inside the teen's bedroom.
Bond for Saint Simon was set at $200,000, although he still remains in the Orange County Jail.
A judge has said that if Saint Simon, who entered the country illegally but obtained a status exempting him from deportation weeks before Alexandria disappeared, is released on bond, he must tell the state where he is living and cannot leave Central Florida.
