Disney adding new 'Frozen' attraction

Maelstrom attraction in Epcot coming to an end

ORLANDO, Fla. – It's the biggest animated film in Disney's history, and now, a new "Frozen" attraction is coming to Epcot.

The new ride will replace the Maelstrom attraction at Epcot, which will close on Oct. 6.

Local 6 theme park expert Ken Pilcher said Disney has committed to expanding "Frozen" throughout its theme parks.

"Disney is already making a lot of money off of 'Frozen' in the theme parks," Pilcher said.  "One of the most successful things Hollywood Studios has added in years is a 'Frozen Celebration' that was put together in just a few weeks."

Pilcher said Norway helped inspire the look of the film, which is Disney's biggest animated hit of all time.  The Norway Pavilion opened at Epcot 26 years ago, and the Maelstrom ride was the centerpiece.

"The ride is a favorite of old-school Epcot fans," said Pilcher.  "But this is an easy way for Disney to bring in a new ride for a lot less money."

When told of the proposed ride, a 9-year-old boy named Wayne, of New Jersey, told Local 6 that he has a few ideas for the Disney "imagineers."

"Fake snow to make it more realistic for the ride because it's 'Frozen,' and there's snow in 'Frozen,'" he said.
