Local 6 students get free shopping spree

It was a day filled with surprises for three local students who went over and beyond this school year.

Karen Paredes, 14, was one of the three picked for the shopping spree inside A Gift For Teaching's free supply store.

The students, nominated by their teachers, shined in the classroom despite hardships at home.

"I think their teachers are sort of amazed by what they're able to do, despite the challenges they face," said Jane Thompson, A Gift For Teaching president.

Local 6 anchor Matt Austin helped kick off the "Grant A Wish" event.

Each student was given a cart and five minutes to fill it up with whatever they wanted.

Students also had the opportunity to take pictures with some of Seaworld's animals, and were given gift baskets with tickets to the park.

The Orlando Magic presented the students with VIP tickets on the court.

Karen's advice to other students:

"Get good grades, behave and don't take the wrong path," she said.

The next "Grant a Wish" will be next year; teachers will start nominating their students in October.
