Volusia County to hire 150 lifeguards

Applicants must be 16 years old by June 1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Volusia County will hire 150 lifeguards for the summer, with tryouts starting this weekend.

Applicants must be at least 16 years old on or before June 1 and be able to swim 500 meters in less than 10 minutes, swim 50 yards in under 30 seconds, and run a half-mile in less than 3 minutes, 15 seconds.

Starting pay is $10.05 an hour with EMT certification, and $9.65 an hour without. Potential candidates will have to undergo a background check, a physical and drug screening.

Those who meet the requirements must attend training classes in March or April and complete a 40-hour first responder/CPR course.

The tryouts will be on the following Saturdays:

  • Feb. 27: 8 a.m. to noon at the Port Orange YMCA, 4701 City Center Parkway, Port Orange; and 1 to 4 p.m. at the DeLand YMCA, 761 E. International Speedway Blvd., DeLand
  • March 5: 8 a.m. to noon at the Ormond Beach YMCA, 500 Sterthaus Drive, Ormond Beach; and 1 to 4 p.m. at the Port Orange YMCA
  • March 12: 8 a.m. to noon at the Cypress Aquatic Center, 981 George W. Engram Blvd., Daytona Beach; and 1 to 4 p.m. at the Port Orange YMCA
  • March 19: 8 a.m. to noon at the Port Orange YMCA and 1 to 4 p.m. at the Cypress Aquatic Center
