DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A Daytona Beach Police Department sting in a local park where numerous larceny incidents have occurred led to the arrest of four men in the sting and seven men total, according to police.
The sting operation on Friday at Breakers Beachfront Park placed an iPhone 7 Plus in a backpack as bait for would-be thieves.
The sting resulted in the arrests of 19-year-old Joel Gilman, 36-year-old Shah Ullah, 47-year-old Dave Webster and 58-year-old John Davis on grand theft charges.
Police said they watched the men take the phone, or be the lookout for the person accused of stealing it.
In addition to these four men being arrested, three people were arrested for having an open container.
Scott Conway visited the park Tuesday while vacationing in the area. He said he appreciates police cracking down on crime.
"Seriously, there's too much of it going on. If they're taking a risk to go through that bag, that's on them," Conway said.
Josh Walker often stops by the park with his family and he said he was somewhat skeptic about the undercover operation.
"I guess it's good just to get less thieves and stuff in the area but at the same time, kind of downing other people who might have been doing a good thing and got caught in the act," Walker said.
