Intoxicated man, 21, sprays bullets through Oviedo woman's door, deputies say

Suspect found in house behind woman's home, deputies say

OVIEDO, Fla. – An Oviedo man accused of firing a gun into a woman's home Thursday morning while he was intoxicated was arrested, Seminole County deputies said.

Deputies said a woman called 911 around 8:40 a.m. to report that bullets were being fired through the back door of her home on Shadow Creek Circle.

"This guy did a minimum of about 10 shots," Valentina Williams said.

Williams said she thought she was being targeted by her neighbor, Liam Portway, 21, who lives directly behind her.

"I thought somebody was trying to kill me, so I was trying to run to a place with no windows. I literally sat on the sofa for a minute and a half when a shot fired through the sliding door," she said.

She said she had just woken up and was about to begin working when she heard the gunfire.

"All of a sudden, I heard something. At first, I thought it was my cellphone dropped," the woman told dispatchers. "Then I realized it wasn't my cellphone that dropped. It was somebody shooting in there."

She told News 6 the first couple of shots shattered a patio door and the next shots shattered windows on the back of her home.

"I ran for cover in between the wall and the living room. I actually had to run to the sofa to get the cellphone to get to the garage to call 911," Williams said.

She said she also thought someone could have thrown something at her door, but then realized what she had heard was a bullet. She then heard three or four more bullets, according to the 911 call.

The woman told dispatchers that she was scared and depressed, as the shooting took place the week of her son's death anniversary.

"My heart is heavy 'cause, you know, I lost my son. The death of my son's anniversary is this week and I do get a little depressed and I kinda stay to myself. And I will try to work my way through it," the woman said.

Shortly after seeing that the woman's sliding glass door had been shattered, deputies found Portway at a home directly behind where the woman lived, the Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said they found three weapons, including a rifle, inside the home where Portway was found. A bullet that had gone through the woman's door appeared to be the same size as one that would be fired from a gun similar to one that was found near Portway, deputies said.

Bullet holes found in a fence separating the two homes led deputies to believe that the shots had been fired from Portway's home toward where the woman lived, the Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said Portway appeared to be intoxicated while they were interviewing him. Two spent shell casings that deputies believe had recently been fired were found in Portway's pocket, the Sheriff's Office said.

Portway was arrested and charged with firing a weapon into a house, criminal mischief and firing a weapon under the influence of alcohol, deputies said.

Now, Williams said she has anxiety about being in her own home.

"Do I feel safe knowing he just got out of jail today? Absolutely not," she said.
