NBA athletes help repair VFW post in Orlando

Hoops for Troops Week gets results for local veterans

ORLANDO, Fla. – Veteran's Day is right around the corner and some familiar faces are getting results cleaning up an Orlando Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

"Place needs a facelift, paint-wise," said Ran Palfrey with VFW Post 4287 on South Goldenrod Road. "The place is in disarray; it's not like this all the time."

Dozens of current members of the military, along with current and former NBA players, teamed up as part of Hoops for Troops Week to clean up the VFW. Volunteers put a new coat of paint on the wall, along with power-washing the sidewalk and mulching the yard.

"It's just an honor to be here to help out and I hope it's the same when I'm in their shoes one day," said Rashad Archie, a veteran and a recruiter with the U.S. Navy.

"This right here, me painting, this is something small maybe to me, but it's probably big to someone else and that's what it's about," said Bo Outlaw, a former NBA player and Orlando Magic ambassador.

Those at the VFW said they are appreciative that the little things are being taken care of, so they can focus on what really matters: taking care of veterans.

"Most of our people are retired or disabled in some fashion," Palfrey said. "So it's not like they can volunteer and bend over, lift ladders or paint. So it's nice to have the younger people coming in."
