Joe's Crab Shack on Daytona Beach Pier closes for repairs

Plumber says restaurant should reopen Thursday morning

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Joe's Crab Shack in Daytona Beach closed around 7 p.m. Wednesday.

People walking around on the beach told News 6 they've been seeing some leaks coming from the pipes.

"I'm a photographer. I was down there not too long ago taking photographs and videos. There's a big huge leak underneath," Sean Andersen said.

Andersen said he was a filming a video when he noticed something strange under the restaurant.

"It's been like that for weeks. It's a pipe with water coming out of it. Looks like a sewage pipe," he said.

News 6 contacted Daytona Beach Safety Patrol, which said Joe's Crab Shack experienced a spill. A restaurant worker told News 6 over the phone they were dealing with a technical issue with their plumbing.

News 6 went to check things out and ran into a plumber under the pier. He said the restaurant closed up for the night because of drainage problems, leaving restrooms inaccessible.

The surprise closure and locked gate left some discouraged tourists on the beach.

"I guess we're going to have to find someplace else," one tourist said.

"We decided to come up here to eat tonight. We're very disappointed," said another.

The plumber told News 6 repairs will be made overnight and Joe's Crab Shack should be open again Thursday morning.
