Death of infant at Tavares motel called suspicious

Medical examiner unable to determine cause of death, police say

TAVARES, Fla. – The death of a 3-month-old boy at a Tavares motel Friday evening is being classified as suspicious, according to the Tavares Police Department.

Officers were called to Inn on the Green around 5:35 p.m. after a caller reported that an infant wasn't breathing. The infant was taken to Florida Hospital Waterman, where he died at 6:36 p.m., police said.

The Department of Children and Families was also called to the motel.

An autopsy was performed Saturday, but the medical examiner found no visual trauma to the child and was unable to determine a cause of death, police said. Officers said it could take 6-8 weeks to receive the toxicology report.

The boy's mother was at work during the incident and he was with his father, according to police.
