Former Rockledge councilman accused of firing his gun into car

Ralph McCoig charged with aggravated assault with a firearm

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. – A former Rockledge councilman has been arrested after he was accused of firing a bullet into the car of the man with whom he was having a civil property dispute, according to deputies.

According to the report, Ralph McCoig was arrested on Tuesday after he pulled up to the car on Barton Avenue and Seminole Drive in Rockledge and pointed a black handgun at the victim's vehicle.

McCoig fired at least one bullet at the victim and the vehicle with malicious intent, according to police.

The report said the bullet struck the victim's vehicle 1-inch above the door handle, which deputies said was in line with the victim's upper torso.

“They do know each other from business dealings,” Lt. Donna Seyferth, of the Rockledge Police Department, told News 6 partner Florida Today.

“They were both in their vehicles when they came up to the intersection,” she said, adding that it was then that McCoig took aim at the other man.

The victim was not struck in the process,  Seyferth said.

McCoig was charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with intent to commit a felony and shooting a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle.

He is being held on $15,000 bond, and he is not allowed to posses firearms.

According to News 6 partner Florida Today, McCoig was elected to the Rockledge City Council in 1998 and served until 2002. He also was the former chairman of the Florida Real Estate Commission from October 2007 to October 2011.
