LONGWOOD, Fla. – The City of Longwood could be changing the permit requirements for residents seeking to hold garage sales.
At a meeting on Monday, the city clerk is asking commissioners to give policy direction on how garage sale permits are administered and regulated by the city.
Currently, residents are required to obtain a no-cost permit from the city prior to conducting a garage sale.
The city clerk, however, has indicated the permitting process has been a strain on administrative resources.
As part of a review of ordinances, the city clerk’s office has recommended two policy options for commissioners to consider.
The first option, which staff recommends, would be to eliminate the permit requirement while retaining regulations governing garage sale activities.
A second option would be to retain the permit requirement and establish a fee.
According to the city’s study of 18 nearby municipalities, 11 require a garage sale permit and eight of those charge a permit fee between $1 and $10.
Based on the survey, the city found a fee of approximately $5 would be consistent with neighboring jurisdictions.
City staff would draft an ordinance once commissioners make a decision on a permit option.
The discussion is scheduled for Monday at 6 p.m.
