OVIEDO, Fla. – A judge rejected bond on Friday for the Oviedo woman accused of shooting and killing her teen daughter.
Sujatha Guduru appeared in court in a wheelchair Friday in Seminole County after Monday's shooting in Oviedo, in which she faces a charge of first-degree premeditated murder.
Guduru's lawyer, Brian Bieber, said Guduru has suffered mental health problems for more than 20 years, including hospitalization.
"(She) was under the care of a professional," he said. "She was taking psychotropic medication. Unfortunately, the treatment of mental illness is not an exact science."
Beiber said Guduru is currently in "a horrific state of shock" and calls what happened on Monday "a tragedy of epic proportion."
Before the shooting, investigators say Guduru emailed her brother that she was going to harm herself and her 17-year-old daughter, Chetana, an international baccalaureate student at Seminole High School in Sanford.
Police said Guduru tried to take her own life after shooting her daughter by shooting herself in the chest.
She was released from the hospital on Wednesday night and turned over to the Seminole County jail on Thursday.
According to police, Guduru said she shot her daughter because she believed there would be no one to care for her after Guduru killed herself. It's not clear why she wanted to kill herself.
Her attorney wants to know how she was able to purchase a .38-caliber revolver just a few days before the shooting if she had a history of mental illness.
Guduru's next court appearance is scheduled for March 11 at which time she will face arraignment.
