A driver traveling west in the outside lane was attempting to merge into the inside lane due to traffic when the man, identified as Eugene Aldrich, stepped in the vehicle’s path, officers said.

According to police, the driver said Aldrich moved from the center turn lane to the lane in front of her car, attempting to walk north across the road.

The driver did not see the pedestrian before he stepped in front of her and she attempted to swerve to avoid him, but struck the man, investigators said.
