Flooding concerns grow in Brevard County as coastal flood warning remains in place

Higher-than-normal tides, heavy rain contribute to issue

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Some neighborhoods in Brevard County are dealing with flood problems after heavy rain, strong winds, and higher-than-normal tides.

In Cape Canaveral Mobile Estates, much of the low-lying neighborhood took on water after rain Thursday night.

Bill Skinner is the property manager in the community and said the water came close to entering some homes.

“Both roads were totally flooded,” Skinner said. “The water was just pouring in from all directions. It was the worst I’ve seen in the last couple of bad rains.”

The neighborhood was able to drain the water after repairs were made to a pump early Friday.

“Pulling the pump half apart to get it going again. We finally got it going,” Skinner said. “Without that, there would have been a lot more damage with houses.”

Skinner said the Cape Canaveral Mobile Estates has been working with the city on a long-term solution for persistent flood problems.

“They put in for the funds for a pump for the canal and they’re supposed to hear back this month. So, we’re praying,” Skinner said.

The Oak Point retirement community near Titusville has also seen problems with flooding, but from winds and higher tides.

Tom Myers lives in the neighborhood and said the water has been covering the street near his home for several days.

“If it comes up much more, there’s going to be more problems,” Myers said. “What we’ve had for the last several days is as bad as it’s been without there being a hurricane.”

Brevard County is currently under a coastal flood warning and coastal conditions will stay rough through Saturday, with continued flooding and strong rip currents.
