PLAYALINDA BEACH, Fla – Strong winds and rough surf can push tiny sea turtle hatchlings back onto Central Florida beaches, and wildlife officials are reminding beachgoers not to pick them up or put them back in the ocean.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the hatchlings, known as washback sea turtles, may need specialized care after being carried back to shore by waves and wind.
The agency is urging anyone who spots a hatchling that appears to be in trouble to call for help instead of touching it.
Along beaches such as Playalinda Beach in Brevard County, hatchlings can be difficult to see, especially when they are tangled in seaweed along the shoreline.
Ginger Roberge, who has lived along Central Florida’s coast since 2003, said people should leave hatchlings alone and contact wildlife officials if they are concerned.
“The turtle hatchlings, you’re not supposed to touch them,” Roberge said. “They’re supposed to find their way on their own. ”Roberge said beachgoers should note exactly where they found the hatchlings so officials can respond.
“Let them know which station you’re at,” she said. “Let them know you’ve spotted some turtle hatchlings there and let them handle it.”
The warning comes during a record nesting season in Volusia County.
In July, News 6 reported the county had counted its 1,517th nest of the season.
The FWC has not confirmed any impacts from last week’s strong weather conditions, but the agency said it wants beachgoers to be prepared.
Officials said the same guidance applies to sea turtle nests, which are often marked off along the shoreline.
Strong winds and waves can shift the sand covering eggs, and the FWC recommends calling the agency if a nest appears disturbed.
