Coffee that gives the best buzz for your buck

Local 6 compares amounts of caffeine against purchase price

ORLANDO, Fla. - The morning coffee run is a daily ritual for many Americans. Whether it's Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts or even just a cup of fresh brewed coffee at home, many have a need for the caffeine fix.

But do you know what brand of coffee gives you the most caffeine per fluid ounce?

Recently the Huffington Post teamed up with the Center for Science in The Public Interest, or CSPI, to analyze nine popular brands of coffee.  McDonald's had the lowest amount of caffeine per fluid ounce with 9.1 milligrams.

On the other end of the spectrum was a brand called Deathwish Coffee that contains an apparent 54.2 milligrams of caffeine per fluid ounce.  Deathwish Coffee can only be ordered online and costs 19.99 per 12 ounce bag plus shipping.

If you shop around for the coffees in the study that can be store-bought and brewed at home, Peet's Brewed Coffee is the best value.

A 12 ounce bag costs $7.99 at Publix and contains 16.7 milligrams of caffeine per fluid ounce, more than Caribou and Dunkin Donuts, which are pricier.

Seattle's Best is also lower in price at the grocery store, but contains far less caffeine with just 10.4 milligrams per fluid ounce.

Starbucks was the second most caffeinated brand next to DeathWish with 20.6 milligrams of caffeine per fluid ounce, but also the second most expensive to purchase.

Caribou, although popular for his aromatic flavors, was the worst value for the amount of caffeine.  It has less then both Peet's and Starbucks but cost more than both at $9.99 a bag.

The CSPI also has a full analysis of caffeine available through its website, including how much caffeine is contained in popular energy drinks and coffee flavored ice creams.
