BOZEMAN, Mont. – A Montana man lived to tell the story of a horrifying encounter with a grizzly bear on a recent hiking trip.

Todd Orr of Bozeman had blood all over his face and arms after a bad run-in with a mama bear in southwest Montana. Orr posted about the incident on his Facebook page, writing that a grizzly bear and her cubs spotted him about three miles into his hike.

"The sow saw me right away and they ran a short distance up the trail. But suddenly she turned and charged straight my way," Orr wrote. "I yelled a number of times so she knew I was human and would hopefully turn back. No such luck. I gave her a full charge of bear spray at about 25 feet. Her momentum carrier her right through the orange mist and on me."

Orr said the bear was on top of him, biting his arms, shoulders and backpack.

"The force of each bite was like a sledgehammer with teeth," Orr wrote.

Orr shared a video on Facebook showing his bloodied face, a huge gash on the side of his head and bite marks on his arm. The video is graphic.

"I think my arm is broke. Legs are good. Internal organs are good. Eyes are good," Orr said.

Orr continued down the trail after the attack, but the bear followed him and attacked him again.

"I couldn't believe this was happening a second time! Why me? I was so lucky the first attack, but now I questioned if I would survive the second," Orr wrote.

Orr said the bear slammed down on top of him and bit his shoulder and arms again.

"One bite on the forearm went through the bone and I heard a crunch," he wrote. "Another couple bites to my head and a gash opened above my ear, nearly scalping me."

Orr said the bear stood on him for 30 seconds as her front claws dug into his lower back. The bear took off, leaving him once again on the ground with more blood on his body.

"I thought that if she came back a third time I would be dead," Orr said.

Blood was dripping off his head and elbows when he got up and walked away. He called his girlfriend, then 911 when he got back to his truck.

"Bear spray doesn't always work, but it's better than nothing," Orr said.

Orr said X-rays found a chip out of the ulna bone in his forearm. He had several shoulder punctures and tears, a 5-inch gash along the side of his head and bruises all over his body.

"Not my best day, but I'm alive. So thankful I'm here to share with all of you," he wrote.
