Daytona woman reported missing says she's safe, police say

Woman won't speak to police because of warrants out for her arrest, DBPD says

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Daytona Beach Police Department canceled the search for a missing woman after she told them she was safe, police said.

Kanisha Howard, 26,  of South Daytona, was reported missing just before 1 a.m. Thursday, when police responded to a disturbance at a home on the 600 block of Aberdeen Street, where Howard was.

Police said when they arrived at the home, they saw someone standing on the driver's side of a dark-colored Chevy Impala with a military special license plate. When the officers got out of their patrol car, they said the driver of the Impala took off.

Police then talked to Howard's aunt and grandmother, who were at the house during the incident. They said Howard had just come to the home for some money when Howard's "on-again, off-again" boyfriend, Shawn Adams, 22, of Daytona Beach, knocked on the door.

Howard answered the door and immediately went outside with Adams, closing the door behind her, according to the incident report.

Howard's aunt told police she saw Adams push Howard against the door and hit her several times before he dragged her across the front yard. Howard ran toward the Impala and got into the driver's seat, according to the report. Adams tried to pull her out of the car, but she resisted him. Police said he then began biting her on the forehead.

Adams said he couldn't be at the scene when police arrived because he had warrants out for his arrest, so he pushed Howard partially into the passenger seat, got into the driver's seat and fled the area, police said.

Early Friday morning, an officer saw the vehicle with both the driver and passenger door open on the 100 block of Thomasson Avenue, police said.

As the officer approached the car, he saw what he said appeared to be "the legs of a female subject extended from the driver's compartment of the vehicle," and a woman's torso, from the waist up, inside the car.

The officer said once he identified himself as the police, the woman, who "appeared to be unconscious," was pulled into the driver seat of the car by an unknown person.

The driver then fled northbound on Thomasson Avenue at a high speed with both doors still open, according to the report.

A vehicle pursuit then began, but the officer was unable to stop the car during the pursuit, and, therefore, could not identify the driver.

Police told News 6 that Howard spoke to her family Friday afternoon, letting them know she was safe with Adams, but refused to talk to police because she has warrants out for her arrest.

Daytona Beach police said they have not been able to find Adams.

Adams is on the police department's most wanted list as a person of interest in a shooting last month, police said. He also has two warrants out for his arrest for burglary and grand theft.
