Search on for boater who fell in water, deputies say

Deputies, FWC searching Lake Harney

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A search is underway for a boater who fell in Lake Harney Wednesday morning, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesperson Chad Weber said the boater was fishing with a friend when he went into the water.

"There was two individuals fishing on a boat and one fell off and I guess he went under rather quickly and his friend made a call to the Sheriff's Office," Weber said.

Deputies said a boater reported seeing another boater fall into the water without surfacing at about 11:45 a.m.

Rescuers with the FWC and the Sheriff's Office spent hours searching for the missing boater, but at last check they have not found the boater.

"We'll continue to search until it's dark and we don't have much visibility and then first thing tomorrow morning we'll be right back out here," Weber said.

Investigators interviewed the friend the missing boater was with, as well as eyewitnesses. It's unclear how the boater fell off the vessel.

Officials have not released the identity of the missing boater.

Rescuers are holding onto hope they find the missing boater soon.

"We'll always consider it a search and rescue until proven otherwise. Stranger things have happened. We found people the next day, so we're going to keep that in mind and hope for the best and continue to search," Weber said.
