Trooper: 1 dead after car turns in front of car going in opposite direction

2 others taken to hospital in serious condition

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – A car accident in Lake County Saturday night leaves one person dead and two others in the hospital in serious condition.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Michael Chapin, 68, of Eustis, turned his pickup truck into the path of a car driven by Ryan Reich, 34, also of Eustis, causing the accident.

Chapin's passenger, Gail Chapin, 59, was killed in the accident, troopers said.

Chapin was traveling westbound on state road 44A when he made a left-hand turn onto John Lane, turning directly into the path of the other car, the FHP reports said.

Chapin and a passenger in the other car, Jane Reich, 59, of Eustis, were both taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

A second passenger in Reich's car, Thomas Reich, 60, of Eustis, and Reich himself, were not injured.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.

It is not known if alcohol played a part in the accident.
