ORLANDO, Fla. – University of Central Florida coach Johnny Dawkins has hired Kelvin Johnson as his Director of Player Development.
Johnson, who was hired Wednesday and announced as the final member of Dawkins' coaching staff by UCFKnights.com, came shortly after the announcement of Vince Taylor as assistant coach for the Knights.

"This is a great opportunity to give back to kids," Johnson said in the UCFKnights.com story. "I'm excited to teach many of the life lessons that I have learned over the years, and I'm excited to work with a good friend in Johnny Dawkins. We're trying to do something great here at UCF, and I can't wait to get things going."
Johnson comes to the Knights with an abundance of basketball knowledge. He was drafted as a fifth-round pick by the Indiana Pacers in the 1985 NBA draft and was a four-year starter for the Richmond Spiders.
Johnson, who was inducted into the Richmond Athletics Hall of Fame in the class of 2008-09, was a key part of the Spiders' first-ever appearance in the 1982 NIT and on the 1984 NCAA tournament team, which defeated Auburn in the first round.
"We are thrilled to welcome Kelvin into the UCF Family as a member of our staff," Dawkins said in the story. "With his wealth of basketball experience and knowledge, and his high level of character, I can't think of a better person to help mold our student-athletes. We are looking forward to Kelvin working as an integral member of the Knights in 2017."
Johnson grew up in Washington, D.C., and played against Dawkins as a child and against him in high school where he was a player at DeMatha high school.
The Knights will be led in the coming season by Tacko Fall, B.J. Taylor and A.J. Davis.
