US astronaut launching next month may spend year in space
Astronaut Mark Vande Hei learned just last week that heโll launch April 9 on a Russian rocket to the International Space Station. Tentatively titled โVyzov," challenge in English, itโs meant to highlight Russian space activities and glorify the cosmonaut profession, according to a news release. Five years have passed since now retired astronaut Scott Kelly completed a 340-day space station mission, a U.S. record. Space station missions typically last six months. Until the private company began providing rides last year, Russia provided the only lift for space station crews once NASA's shuttles stopped flying.

(Roscosmos Space Agency via AP)MOSCOW โ A trio of space travelers blasted off to the International Space Station on Wednesday, using for the first time a fast-track maneuver that allowed them to reach the orbiting outpost in just a little over three hours. NASAโs Kate Rubins along with Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov of the Russian space agency Roscosmos lifted off as scheduled Wednesday morning from the Russia-leased Baikonur space launch facility in Kazakhstan for a six-month stint on the station. For the first time, they tried a two-orbit approach and docked with the space station in just a little over three hours after lift-off. Ryzhikov, who will be the stationโs skipper, said the crew will try to pinpoint the exact location of a leak at a stationโs Russian section that has slowly leaked oxygen.
