1 killed, 1 hurt in pursuit with Florida Highway Patrol troopers

Car flips, hits tree during Orange County pursuit

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – One man was killed and another was injured early Tuesday in a crash that occurred during a pursuit in Orange County with Florida Highway Patrol troopers, authorities said.

Letroy Richardson, 28, was killed in the crash, which happened about 3:10 a.m. near the intersection of 29th Street and Rio Grande Avenue in Holden Heights.

Alvin Gilbert, 55, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries after being extricated from the vehicle.

According the the FHP, troopers saw a vehicle make an illegal turn on Orange Blossom Trail and followed the car as it traveled on the wrong side of the road.

Troopers attempted to pull the car over, but the vehicle flipped and crashed into a tree during a five-minute pursuit, the FHP said.

"Nobody forces a person to flee from police.  The law requires you, as soon as an officer attempts to stop you, to stop immediately, whether you're a criminal or whether you're not," FHP Sgt. Kim Montes said.  "Unfortunately, this crash happened."

It's unclear why they fled, but troopers said Richardson had a revoked license.  Gilbert, who was on work-release in Orange County but failed to report to authorities on Nov. 1, was arrested on a warrant, troopers said.
