LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – A pedestrian who exited his vehicle after crashing on the Florida Turnpike in Lake County Thursday night was struck and killed by an SUV in a separate wreck moments later, troopers said.

The fatal crash, which occurred on the Florida Turnpike at mile marker 276 around 9:45 p.m., happened after the 28-year-old Orlando man had crashed on County Road 455 and wound up on the southbound shoulder of the Turnpike, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

He then exited his vehicle, walked across the southbound lanes of the Turnpike and crossed the concrete median, a crash report shows.

According to troopers, the man then entered the northbound inside lane of the roadway at the same time a 24-year-old woman was driving in that same direction.

The man entered into the direct path of the Gainesville driver and died at the scene, troopers said.

Both crashes remain under investigation.
