BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – Southbound Interstate 95 was shut down Christmas morning in Brevard County after Florida Highway Patrol troopers took a reckless driver off the road, soon taking that driver and a passenger into custody, according to the agency.

The roadblock was in place between Titusville and Mims for about two hours before traffic was seen flowing again by around 1:20 p.m.

According to a statement from an FHP spokesperson, troopers were in pursuit of a 2020 Mercedes-Benz C-Class that was being driven recklessly in the southbound lanes when one of the troopers performed a PIT maneuver, causing both the Mercedes-Benz and the trooper’s vehicle to leave the roadway and strike a guardrail.

The trooper was hospitalized for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, the statement reads.

The driver and passenger of the Mercedes-Benz — the latter of whom had a confirmed warrant out of Broward County, the spokesperson said — were then taken into custody, according to the statement.

FHP is still investigating.
