Businesses hope 72-mile-long garage sale helps recovery

Shops, companies hit hard by Hurricane Matthew

FLAGLER BEACH, Fla. – Businesses hit hard by Hurricane Matthew are hoping a 72-mile-long garage sale will help bring customers through their doors.

The Super Scenic A1A Highway Garage Sale takes place Saturday, stretching south from Ponte Vedra to Ormond Beach.

A portion of that highway washed away after Matthew churned up the waves, eating away at the sand and the roadway.

The owner of Pasta Pasta in Flagler Beach said he estimates he's lost half of his normal sales as a result.

"(It's been) a real slow start coming back," Frank Amaturo said. "A lot of people weren't aware the road was open, and it really kind of killed things for us."

Amaturo and other business owners hope the garage sale helps bring in customers.

"Hopefully, we'll see some pizza pickup -- sell slices," he said. "We do an all-day carry-out special in our window. We do five dollars for two slices of pizza and a soda. Hopefully, we will sell quite a few of those."

The Super Scenic A1A Highway Garage Sale begins at 8 a.m.
