Pickup truck with teens in bed plows into Orlando home

Several teens injured in crash, FHP says

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol said several teens were injured after the pickup truck they were riding in struck a home Sunday afternoon.

Troopers said the accident happened just before noon at 7444 Kalani Street.

The homeowner's son, Marco Avila, told Local 6 according to firefighters no one can live in the home. Avila said the accident caused windows to shatter and even shifted the house's foundation.

He says no one was inside at the time of the accident.

"Luckily, thank God, they were working," said Avila.

According to FHP, Yan Santiago, 16, was driving when he failed to make a turn on Kalani Street. Santiago lost control of the truck after he tried to overcompensate and hit the home.

Troopers said Santiago suffered only minor injuries, but four other teens riding in the bed of the pickup truck suffered more severe injuries.

Troopers said 16-year-old Ricardo Ortiz, 16-year-old Ariana Rivera, 16-year-old John Largo and 16-year-old Miguel Liriano were all taken to local hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

Santiago was cited for careless driving with serious bodily injury and driving without a valid license.

Avila says troopers told him speed was a factor in the crash. He wonders why Santiago would be speeding through the neighborhood, but says he's more concerned with the teens who were injured.

"My heart goes to the families. It's an accident, regardless, all around. Every family got affected right before Christmas," said Avila.
